Perry claimed he acted in self-defense when he shot the protester, Garrett Foster, who was carrying an AK-47 rifle at the time.

The decision to pardon Perry has been met with criticism, as Abbott lacks the authority to issue a pardon

Abbott made the announcement on social media less than 24 hours after Perry's conviction.

The jury found Perry guilty of murder but not guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Perry faces up to life in prison, and his sentencing is expected to take place soon.

Perry's defense team argued that he acted in self-defense

Foster’s brother, Ryan Foster, said he didn't think Perry should be pardoned, stating that Perry wanted to kill a protester
